121Reach Orientation & Bake Sale

The 121Reach team was very excited to kick off the school year with information displays at both the Taylor Road Middle School and Chattahoochee High School orientation day on August 5th! At each venue, the team set up a table with a colorful triboard filled with pictures and information about 121Reach. On the tables, there were also brochures for parents and students to take, permission forms for tutee parents, and official 121Reach T-shirt order forms! These displays were a success! Many middle schoolers and high schoolers showed interest in joining the program and signed up to be a part of the many things that are in store for 121Reach.
In addition to having display tables set up, 121Reach held a bake sale at Taylor Road Middle School! Some of our various thoughtful tutors and sponsors contributed by bringing baked goods ranging from brownies and cupcakes to lemon squares and snickerdoodles! By the end of the bake sale, 121Reach raised over $100 and met with a plethera of interested parents and eager middle schoolers who want to become a part of 121Reach.
The 121Reach team thanks all who took part in orientation day & the bake sale and is looking forward to a rewarding school year of tutoring, learning, and building lasting friendships!

News Recap [May 20, 2009]

May 20, 2009 End-of-the-Year Party
The 121Reach Party was a great time to celebrate and recap the year. There was music, food, and fun aplenty, but most importantly, parents, tutors and tutees once again had the chance to interact and get to know each other. Parents who had so far only heard about their child's tutor finally met him/her in person! In between speeches, awards, and a multitude of heart-felt "thank you"s, parents, tutors, tutees, and sponsors laughed and chatted away.
Tutees and parents, please stay in touch over the summer! The tutors would love to hang out or just chat over a frappuccino sometime. If you have any thoughts, questions, concerns, etc. about 121Reach, don't hesitate to call or email!
Last but not least, for those of you who are rising freshmen, congratulations! You have just survived 3 grueling years of change, hardship--and laughter--and we welcome you to a new stage of your life and education. We can't wait to see you at school next year!

Have a super fun and safe summer!

Here are some photos from our event. Keep an eye out for our photo gallery that's coming soon!

A Reflection from Lydia Atangcho...

When I was approached by Fan Fan with an opportunity to join her tutoring club, I was enthralled by the chance to be part of what was then named TuTR Club (Tutor Taylor Road Club). What started out as Fan's humble yet ambitious club has blossomed into a remarkable not for profit organization marked by a vast array of learning, academic and beyond. 121Reach has become a haven for the growth and development of minds and I am honored to have been a witness to this. The relationships exhibited between the tutees and tutors have yielded a learning environment in which both benefit from each other. While the tutors are providing their tutees with help in their subjects and study skills, the tutees are in likewise and often unknowingly showing the tutors new ways of understanding concepts and explaining them. Not to mention, it always helps to brush up on those middle school subjects we have forgotten.
In additon to the learning experiences provided by 121Reach, the organization has also shown me the importance of responsibility and accountability. I have realized the rewards that team work can bring. Since each tutor has been given a designated tutee, it is imperative that he/she is ready to take on the task of catering to the needs of the tutee, may it be help with a math problem or advice on how to cope with the rigorous demands of school as a whole. 121Reach has brought out that desire in high school students to take on this challenge and use it to their benefit by learning from it. As an officer of the organization, naturally, accountability is key. While often times in a teenager's life, one may get away with not performing an assigned task, 121Reach has made me recognize the impragmatism of shrugging away responsiblitlies. If I do, I am letting others down, and now that the eager minds of middle school students are involved, accountability is THAT much more important.
My involvement in 121Reach has been a rewarding journey dotted with joyous successes and trying situations. Regardless of the ups and downs, 121Reach has turned out to be an incredible and highly rewarding orgnization in which tutors and tutees delve into an experience bound to leave them changed for the better.

News Recap [March 12-April 2, 2009]

April 2nd, 2009

Tutor Treat Day!  Tutees had a pleasant surprise when they walked into tutoring on Thursday afternoon. Awaiting them in the media center were the tutors...with all sorts of scrumptious snacks they brought for their tutees! Don't worry, tutors got something too--121Reach officers made treats for everyone else! Looking around the room, it seemed that everyone was enjoying their snacks while learning and working together. I think everyone can agree that food makes life better ;) This great event should be a first-Thursday-of-the-month tradition!

March 12th, 2009

Day One The turnout of students on the first day of 121Reach was a lot more than expected--47 students--and even more have signed up since then (now we have about 70 students who participate in the program). After months of planning and stressful weeks of trying to put everything together--permission slips, web-designing, application forms, etc, etc, and  etc--everything just fell together beautifully, like the last pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

The 121Reach Officers would like to give a HUGE "thank you" to Ms. White and Ms. Sheppard for chaperoning after school and for copying and distributing all of our fliers and permission forms throughout the school, to Ms. White for giving us permission to use the Taylor Road Media Center, and to Mr. Folkins for his encouragement and for helping us get in touch with Ms. White. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We'd also like to thank the 121Reach tutors for volunteering their time and energy. As a fellow high schooler, I can attest that life is really stressful. Thank you so much you guys for coming in after 7+ hours of school and  still being passionate and caring and excited to teach and learn. :]

It just amazed me, on this first day, the soft chatter that filled the media center wall-to-wall. As I walked around the room, I observed how each pair worked together. Upon introducing themselves, some tutors and tutees exchanged jokes, others shared interests, and still others began to work right away. Everyone had a different style of working together (something that really fascinates me), but all were earnestly teaching and learning.

The high school students told me that they were really impressed and encouraged by the middle schoolers' maturity and eagerness to learn, which is phenomenal (and also evident in how engaged everyone was as I walked around the room.)

In the future, we hope that tutors and tutees will continue to develop their friendship, and that as the tutees transition into high school, they face even their toughest classes with a new confidence, determination, and passion.
